The Adani Group is working on plans to revive Formula 1 racing at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida, senior company executive Karan Adani said on Saturday.
Speaking at the 70th Foundation Day event of the All India Management Association (AIMA) in New Delhi, Karan Adani said he is “personally engaged” in efforts to bring Formula 1 back to India.
“I’m very excited… the Buddh circuit comes as part of the deal. I am personally engaged in terms of bringing Formula 1 back into India. There is significant potential and a strong following for the sport in the country,” he said.
Government Engagement and Site Visit
According to official sources, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya recently visited the circuit and held discussions with officials of the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA).
The discussions are understood to be part of broader consultations on the feasibility of restarting international motorsport events at the venue.
Background: F1 in India
India hosted Formula 1 races at the Buddh International Circuit in 2011, 2012 and 2013. However, the event was discontinued following a tax dispute with the Uttar Pradesh government, which had categorised the race as entertainment rather than a sport.
The discontinuation led to India’s removal from the Formula 1 calendar despite initial international interest and attendance.
Link to Jaiprakash Associates Acquisition
The Buddh International Circuit was developed by the Jaypee Group. The Adani Group is currently in the process of acquiring Jaiprakash Associates Ltd (JAL), the flagship company of the Jaypee Group.
In November 2025, Adani Group secured the majority lenders’ approval for its ₹14,535-crore resolution plan to take over the debt-laden company. The Buddh Circuit forms part of the assets linked to the acquisition process.
Economic and Branding Implications
Karan Adani said exposure to Formula 1 remains limited in India, with enthusiasts often travelling to destinations such as Abu Dhabi or Singapore to attend races.
He stated that reviving the event could position India as a benchmark for hosting global sporting events, showcasing not only infrastructure but also hospitality and heritage.
“India can set a benchmark for global events like Formula 1,” he said, adding that the country’s global reputation has improved significantly in recent years.
What Happens Next
While discussions are underway, no formal announcement has yet been made regarding timelines or regulatory clearances required to reinstate the race.
Any revival of Formula 1 in India would require coordination between private stakeholders, state authorities, the central government, and Formula 1’s global governing bodies.
Further developments are expected as acquisition proceedings related to Jaiprakash Associates progress.
