A brief moment of tension surfaced during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final between India and New Zealand in Ahmedabad when Indian fast bowler Arshdeep Singh unintentionally struck New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell with a throw during his follow-through.
BCCI Announces ₹131 Crore Reward for India’s T20 World Cup 2026 Winners, ₹6 Crore Higher Than 2024
The incident occurred during the second innings of the final on Sunday, a match that India eventually won convincingly by 96 runs to secure its third men’s T20 World Cup title.
Although the on-field moment briefly created visible frustration from Mitchell, the situation was later resolved when Arshdeep apologised to the New Zealand batter both during the over and again after the match.
Incident During the 11th Over
The moment occurred on the fifth delivery of the 11th over of New Zealand’s chase. At that stage, New Zealand were already under significant pressure while pursuing a target of 256 runs.
After delivering the ball, Arshdeep attempted to return it toward the pitch in his follow-through. The throw appeared to reverse slightly in the air and struck Mitchell.
Mitchell reacted with visible frustration as Arshdeep initially walked back toward his bowling mark without immediate acknowledgment.
At that point in the match, New Zealand were struggling at 102 for five wickets, facing an increasingly difficult task in the chase.
Intervention by Teammates and Umpires
Following the incident, India captain Suryakumar Yadav approached Mitchell to speak with him briefly and defuse the situation.
Meanwhile, on-field umpire Richard Illingworth also spoke with Arshdeep.
At the end of the over, the Indian pacer approached Mitchell and offered an apology for the accidental throw.
The brief exchange helped settle the situation and play continued without further disruption.
Post-Match Apology
After the conclusion of the match, a video shared by New Zealand Cricket’s official social media account showed Arshdeep approaching Mitchell again to apologise.
In the clip, Arshdeep can be heard expressing regret for the incident before the two players shake hands and share a brief laugh.
Speaking to broadcasters after the game, Arshdeep explained that the throw had unintentionally moved in the air before hitting Mitchell.
He said he wanted to apologise personally because the contact was accidental and not intended.
Match Context
The incident took place during a match that had already tilted heavily in India’s favour.
Batting first, India posted a total of 255 runs, setting New Zealand a target of 256 to win the championship.
New Zealand’s chase faltered as wickets fell regularly, leaving them with a difficult task against India’s disciplined bowling attack.
Although Arshdeep did not take a wicket in the final, finishing with figures of 0 for 32, India maintained control of the match and ultimately secured a comfortable victory.
India’s Historic T20 World Cup Triumph
The win gave India its third men’s T20 World Cup title and marked a historic achievement in the tournament’s history.
India became the first men’s team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup after winning the previous edition in 2024.
The team’s campaign featured strong performances from both experienced players and emerging talents, contributing to a dominant run through the tournament.
Arshdeep had also been a key member of India’s victorious 2024 squad and continued to play an important role in the team’s bowling unit during the 2026 competition.
Spirit of the Game
While cricket is generally known for maintaining a calm and respectful atmosphere—particularly in matches involving New Zealand—the brief moment of tension highlighted the competitive intensity of a World Cup final.
However, the swift apology and handshake between Arshdeep and Mitchell reinforced the sport’s emphasis on respect and sportsmanship.
The post-match interaction between the two players demonstrated how on-field misunderstandings can be resolved quickly once the immediate pressure of the contest subsides.
