The Ministry of Defence has been allocated a budget of ₹7.8 lakh crore for the financial year 2026–27, reaffirming the government’s continued focus on strengthening national security and enhancing defence preparedness.

Out of the total allocation, ₹2.19 lakh crore has been earmarked specifically for the modernisation of the armed forces. This provision is aimed at upgrading existing platforms, acquiring advanced defence equipment, and boosting indigenous manufacturing capabilities under the broader defence self-reliance framework.

According to official sources, the Defence Ministry has several high-value procurement projects lined up in the coming period. These include contracts related to fighter aircraft, submarine platforms, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), all of which are considered critical for enhancing operational readiness across land, sea, and air domains.

The modernisation push is expected to strengthen combat capability, improve surveillance and reconnaissance, and address emerging security challenges in a rapidly evolving geopolitical environment. Defence analysts note that sustained capital investment will be key to ensuring technological superiority and long-term force readiness.

The increased allocation also reflects the government’s intent to balance immediate operational requirements with future-oriented defence planning, while supporting domestic defence production and strategic autonomy.
