At least 14 people, including Delhi Police personnel and fire department officials, were injured after an LPG cylinder exploded during a fire at a residential building in Delhi’s Majlis Park area on Sunday morning, officials said.
The incident occurred at a stilt-plus-four-storey building, triggering panic among residents and emergency responders. All the injured were rushed to Safdarjung Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.
Fire Breaks Out on Stilt Floor
According to the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), the fire was reported around 9 am. It originated on the stilt floor of the building, which was being used to store household items on racks and also housed a parked car.
As flames and smoke became visible from the ground level, residents of the building evacuated and gathered outside. Fire tenders were immediately dispatched to the location.
Cylinder Explosion During Firefighting
While firefighting operations were underway, some local residents attempted to move the parked car out of the stilt area to prevent further damage. At the same time, fire personnel were laying hoses and working to bring the blaze under control.
During the operation, an LPG cylinder suddenly exploded, resulting in a massive fireball. The blast caused the fire to intensify rapidly, engulfing several people who were present at the site, including emergency responders.
Injured Include Police and Fire Officials
Officials confirmed that three personnel from Delhi Police’s Adarsh Nagar Police Station were injured in the blast. These include a Sub-Inspector posted with the PCR, an Assistant Sub-Inspector, and a constable.
Three fire department officials also sustained injuries:
- Leading Fireman Suresh Behl (56)
- Fire Operator Ved Prakash (45)
- Fire Operator Sitaram (30)
In addition, eight civilians suffered burn injuries during the explosion and subsequent fire.
All Injured Shifted to Hospital
All 14 injured individuals were taken to Safdarjung Hospital for medical treatment. Hospital sources said the injured are being treated for burn injuries, and their condition is being monitored.
Investigation Underway
Police and fire officials have begun investigating the cause of the fire and the circumstances that led to the LPG cylinder explosion. Preliminary assessments are focusing on how the cylinder was stored and whether safety norms were followed.
Authorities said a detailed inquiry will be conducted, and further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
What Happens Next
Fire safety inspections are expected to be carried out in the area, and officials may issue advisories regarding storage of flammable materials in residential buildings.
The incident has raised concerns over fire safety in stilt parking areas used for storage, particularly in densely populated residential colonies of the national capital.
