The Delhi Government has granted approval for Phase 5 (A) of the Delhi Metro expansion, paving the way for three new corridors aimed at strengthening connectivity across Central Delhi, South Delhi and the airport zone. The project, with an estimated investment of ₹12,014 crore, is scheduled for completion by 2028.
The expansion will add 16.1 km of new metro lines, primarily as extensions of existing corridors, with a strategic focus on reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality.
Approved Metro Corridors Under Phase 5
| S. No. | Corridor | Length (Km) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ramakrishna Ashram Marg – Indraprastha (Extension of Line 8) | 9.913 |
| 2 | Aerocity – IGI Airport Terminal 1 (Extension of Line 10) | 2.263 |
| 3 | Tughlakabad – Kalindi Kunj (Extension of Line 10) | 3.9 |
The project will be implemented by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).
Magenta Line (Line 8) to Become Longest Metro Corridor

The Magenta Line (Line-8) is set to emerge as the longest corridor in the Delhi Metro network, spanning approximately 89 kilometres once Phase IV and Phase V additions are completed.
Currently running between Botanical Garden and Janakpuri West, the line will now extend:
- From Ramakrishna Ashram Marg to Indraprastha via Central Vista
- Further integration with the Indraprastha–Inderlok corridor (Phase IV)
🔹 Key Highlights:
- Total length after expansion: ~89 km
- Total stations: 65
- Underground stations: 40
- Fully driverless operations across the stretch
21 Interchange Stations on Magenta Line
Currently, the Magenta Line has four interchange stations:
- Kalkaji Mandir
- Botanical Garden
- Janakpuri West
- Hauz Khas
Post expansion, 17 additional interchange stations will be added, including:
- Kalindi Kunj
- Chirag Delhi
- Terminal-1 IGI Airport
- Peeragarhi
- Pitampura (Madhuban Chowk)
- Haiderpur Badli Mor
- Majlis Park
- Azadpur
- Pulbangash
- Nabi Karim
- Ramakrishna Ashram Marg
- Shivaji Stadium
- Central Secretariat
- Indraprastha
- Delhi Gate
- New Delhi
- Inderlok
Among these, Central Secretariat, Azadpur, New Delhi and Inderlok will function as triple interchange stations, significantly enhancing multi-line integration.
✈ Airport & South Delhi Connectivity Boost
- The Aerocity–IGI Terminal 1 stretch will improve airport access.
- The Tughlakabad–Kalindi Kunj extension will enhance last-mile connectivity in South-East Delhi.
These expansions are expected to reduce pressure on arterial roads and improve cross-city transit efficiency.
🏗 Engineering Landmarks on Magenta Line
The corridor also features two major technical milestones:
- Haiderpur Badli Mor – Highest elevated metro station (~28.36 metres rail level height)
- Hauz Khas – Deepest underground station (~29 metres below ground)
These reflect the engineering complexity and technological advancements achieved by DMRC.
📊 Strategic Impact
Once operational, Phase 5 will:
✔ Reduce commute time
✔ Improve airport connectivity
✔ Lower vehicular congestion
✔ Support environmental sustainability goals
✔ Enable seamless end-to-end urban mobility
Delhi Metro continues to evolve as the backbone of the capital’s public transport ecosystem, aligning with long-term urban mobility and infrastructure development strategies.
