New Delhi:
A 24-year-old SWAT commando of the Delhi Police Special Cell, Kajal Chaudhary, succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday after battling for life for five days. She was critically injured in an alleged domestic assault at her residence in Mohan Garden, West Delhi.
According to investigators, the incident occurred on January 22 following a heated altercation between Kajal and her husband, Ankur, who works as a clerk with the Ministry of Defence. The dispute reportedly revolved around household finances and outstanding loans.
Police officials stated that during the argument, Kajal contacted her brother, Nikhil, a constable posted at Parliament Street Police Station, seeking immediate assistance. While she was still on the call, Ankur allegedly attacked her, striking her head with a dumbbell. Shortly thereafter, he reportedly informed Nikhil about the incident.
The accused initially took Kajal to a nearby hospital. However, due to the severity of her head injuries, family members later shifted her to a hospital in Ghaziabad for advanced treatment. Despite intensive medical intervention, Kajal passed away. Her post-mortem examination was conducted on Tuesday.
A senior Delhi Police officer disclosed that preliminary findings suggest Kajal’s head was first struck against a door frame before the assault with the dumbbell. Based on the complaint lodged by Nikhil, Ankur was arrested within hours of the incident.
The case was initially registered under charges of attempted murder. Following Kajal’s death, police confirmed that the charges will now be enhanced to murder, reflecting the gravity of the offence.
The incident has cast a pall of grief over Kajal’s native place in Ganaur, where residents and members of the police fraternity are mourning the loss of a young officer whose promising career was abruptly cut short. The case has once again brought focus on domestic violence, even within households associated with disciplined services.
