New Delhi:
What began as a routine air-conditioner installation at a rented flat in South Delhi escalated into a serious dispute involving allegations of racial slurs, sexist remarks, and intimidation. Three women from Arunachal Pradesh have accused their neighbours of humiliation and mental harassment following an altercation in Malviya Nagar last week.

An FIR has since been registered against a neighbour couple under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

What Triggered the Dispute?

The incident reportedly took place on February 20 at around 3:30 PM, when the three women called an electrician to install an air conditioner in their apartment.

During the drilling process required for installation, dust and debris allegedly fell to the lower floor, prompting objections from their neighbours — identified as Harsh Singh and his wife Ruby Jain.

According to the complainants, what started as a minor objection quickly escalated into a heated argument.

Allegations of Verbal Abuse and Threats

One of the women stated that although the electrician apologised for the inconvenience caused by the dust, the neighbours continued to behave aggressively.

“We asked why they were abusing the electrician. He was apologising repeatedly. Instead of calming down, they began arguing with us,” one of the women said.

The complainants allege that the accused used threatening language and later called the police, which further intensified the confrontation.

Racial Slurs and Sexist Remarks

Videos of the altercation have surfaced on social media. In one clip, the accused woman is allegedly heard referring to the Arunachali women as “momo” — a term that is often used as a derogatory stereotype against people from India’s northeastern states.

Other remarks allegedly included:

  • Accusations of working in massage parlours
  • Suggesting they were running a “business” from their home
  • Personal and sexually suggestive taunts

The women claim that these statements were not only defamatory but targeted the dignity of the entire northeastern community.

In the videos, a police officer can be seen attempting to pacify both sides. However, the authenticity of the circulating clips has not been independently verified.

Complainants Deny Allegations

During the argument, one of the women reportedly challenged the neighbours over alleged false accusations, including claims that she consumed alcohol.

“If you think I drink, check my room. See if you find any bottles,” she said during the exchange.

The complainants maintain that they suffered mental harassment and public humiliation as a result of the confrontation.

Legal Action and FIR Details

Delhi Police have registered a case under the following sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita:

  • Section 79 – Word, gesture, or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman
  • Section 351(2) – Criminal intimidation
  • Section 3(5) – Common intention
  • Section 196 – Promoting enmity on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc.

Section 196 is classified as a non-bailable offence.

A senior police official stated that while no physical injuries were reported, the complainants have alleged “mental harassment and humiliation.”

As of now, no arrests have been confirmed. Investigation is ongoing.

Demand for Apology and Accountability

The women have demanded a formal apology from the accused couple. They emphasised that the remarks went beyond a personal dispute and reflected racial prejudice.

“This is not just about us. They insulted the entire northeastern community. There must be consequences,” one of the women said.

Broader Context: Racial Sensitivity in Urban India

The incident has reignited discussions around racial stereotyping and discrimination faced by people from India’s northeastern states in metropolitan cities.

Activists and social commentators argue that such incidents highlight the need for:

  • Greater awareness about diversity and inclusion
  • Stronger enforcement of anti-discrimination laws
  • Sensitisation programs within housing communities

While the dispute began over dust from drilling work, it has now evolved into a matter involving alleged racial targeting and gendered insults.

Conclusion

What started as a routine home repair escalated into a criminal complaint involving serious allegations under Indian law. The case underscores how everyday neighbourhood conflicts can spiral into larger social and legal issues when prejudice and verbal abuse are involved.

Authorities continue to investigate the matter, and further legal steps will depend on the outcome of the inquiry.
