Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has reiterated that his position on Operation Sindoor was principled and consistent with India’s national interest, asserting that he did not breach the Congress party’s stance inside Parliament. He described his views on the issue as “unapologetic,” maintaining that national security must take precedence when the country’s interests are at stake.

Speaking at the Kerala Literature Festival in Kozhikode, Tharoor acknowledged that Operation Sindoor remains the only subject on which there has been visible public divergence between his views and sections of the party. However, he stressed that his comments were made as a responsible parliamentarian and public intellectual, not in defiance of party discipline.

Advocated a Measured, Strategic Response

Referring to his earlier public commentary following the Pahalgam terror attack, Tharoor recalled arguing for a firm but calibrated response. He said India could not allow acts of terrorism to go unanswered, yet must avoid actions that could escalate into a full-scale conflict.

According to Tharoor, his position was rooted in realism—India’s development priorities, dependence on global investment, and regional stability demand responses that are targeted, limited, and clearly focused on terrorism rather than broad military confrontation.

How Can I Oppose What I Recommended?

Tharoor said he was both surprised and satisfied when the Indian government later adopted a course of action closely aligned with what he had publicly suggested. In such a situation, he noted, criticism would have been inconsistent with his own stated views, which is why he supported the operation during and after its execution.

National Interest Above Party Lines

Addressing questions around internal party discomfort—particularly after he led an all-party international delegation to explain India’s position post-Operation Sindoor—Tharoor said differences within political organisations are natural. However, he emphasised that when India’s security and global standing are involved, the nation must come first.

Political Reactions Follow

Tharoor’s remarks triggered sharp reactions from the Bharatiya Janata Party, which accused the Congress of being uneasy with leaders who prioritise national interest over party politics. BJP leaders claimed that Tharoor’s candid assessment had exposed internal contradictions within the opposition.

While the Congress leadership has not issued a formal response to his latest remarks, the episode has once again highlighted the broader debate within Indian politics on balancing party positions with national security considerations.
