The family of late Assamese cultural icon Zubeen Garg has formally approached the Prime Minister of India, urging the Centre to intervene decisively in the ongoing legal proceedings related to his death in Singapore last year.
In a detailed memorandum submitted from Guwahati, the family has called for the constitution of a Special Court in Assam, an expedited trial, and enhanced diplomatic and legal engagement with Singaporean authorities.
Zubeen Garg, widely regarded as a powerful voice of Assam and the Northeast, passed away in Singapore on September 19, 2025, under circumstances that continue to raise serious questions.
His death triggered widespread public concern, with millions seeking clarity and accountability.
Investigation Progress in India and SingaporeAccording to the memorandum, authorities in Singapore initiated proceedings on their own immediately after the incident, while the Indian High Commission assisted with post-mortem and related formalities.
Subsequently, the family lodged an FIR with the Assam CID, following which the Assam Government constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT).
Senior officers from the SIT reportedly travelled to Singapore as part of the probe. After nearly three months of investigation, Assam Police filed a charge sheet running over 2,500 pages, invoking sections related to murder based on the evidence collected.
Parallelly, the family has also presented a detailed submission before the Coroner’s Court in Singapore, seeking clarity on the final hours of Zubeen Garg’s life.
The submission raises questions around safety protocols, decision-making lapses, emergency response and whether crucial opportunities to save his life were missed.
Key Demands Placed Before the CentreIn their appeal, the family has requested the Government of India to take the following steps:
Establish a Special Court in India to ensure focused adjudication and avoid procedural delays
Fast-track the trial through judicial and administrative measuresStrengthen prosecution by appointing senior, nationally reputed prosecutors if required
Deny bail to the accused, citing the gravity of the offenceEnsure active diplomatic and legal coordination with Singapore, including access to all findings, testimonies and materials from the Coroner’s Court The family has stressed that jurisdictional complexities should not obstruct the pursuit of truth or justice.
Family Appeals for Urgent and Serious Action Describing themselves as grieving citizens of a republic founded on justice and the rule of law, the family has said that every lawful avenue has been pursued with dignity and responsibility.
They have appealed for the matter to be treated with urgency, seriousness and moral weight, while drawing strength from the continued support of the people of Assam.
